The Business: Harry Laibstain Rare Coins - Founded in 1980

Although I had been a serious coin collector as a child, I had not considered making a career in coins. That changed in 1979 when bullion prices spiked, and instead of attending law school at William and Mary, I decided to become a coin dealer. The excitement surrounding gold and silver prices was not unlike the situation today. Armed with a fair amount of coin knowledge, inventory from my "kid collection," and some rolls of silver my grandmother had left me, I started out in the coin business, as a vest pocket dealer. After a successful summer, and my obvious passion for the business, I struck up a deal with an uncle in the jewelry business for some counter space in his store. In two years, the business had grown enough to warrant a move to my own office. I initially dealt in relatively common areas of the market like Morgan dollars and Commemoratives, but soon gained the knowledge to acquire and sell tougher seated issues and Key Date coins of all types. Each year my numismatic skills compounded and the business grew. When slabbing coins came to the market in 1986, I had enough experience to gravitate directly to what would dominate the numismatic landscape for the next 24 years and into the future. The power of plastic propelled HLRC up the ladder. Gaining knowledge by dealing in certified coins, our sales, and the quality of coins we offered, grew. It was apparent, however, that coin shows alone would not be enough to acquire all the issues on the market. I began attending coin auctions, and over time learned the intricacies of bidding and buying the coins my clients needed to build top quality collections. Trading coins at shows with other nationally known dealers and buying competitively at auction, resulted in continued growth, increased capital, and an expanded customer base. Today, HLRC is a widely known and nationally respected dealership, specializing in early American federal coinage from 1793-1836, as well as colonial issues. HLRC also makes highly competitive markets in United States Gold coins, especially gem quality and rare dates, as well as all Key Date coins. Among coins most often collected by sets, we are an avid market maker in Half Cents, Large Cents, Standing Liberty Quarters, Bust, Barber, and Walking Liberty Halves, Bust Dollars, and Seated Dollars. We are also very active in scarce die marriages from all the early bust coinage, often stocking many R5, R6, and R7 issues. Dealers from all over the country offer these coins to HLRC because they know we are serious, competitive, and solid trading partners, with a rocket fast check.

Year after year, for the past 30 years, our sales numbers have increased. Along the way, HLRC, as the business is now known, has built a network of customers and dealers as trusted trading partners. We have been a booth holder at over 600 coin shows on the national circuit, and a regular full-page advertiser in Coin World and other publications for over 20 years. We have had a presence online since the mid 90's, owning one of the few four letter web addresses in the coin business. I have been a PNG member for 15 years and Lifetime ANA member, as well as a dealer/member for PCGS and NGC. HLRC enjoys respected and congenial relationships with every major auction company, who consistently court us, to both consign, and bid in their sales. Often Acting as a consultant to these companies, many of my suggestions have become accepted practice. In the last 5 years, we have sold or brokered over 75 million dollars worth of rare coins. Stop by the HLRC booth at any major show to see one of the busiest tables on the bourse. Look through the offerings on our new, highly original website and see some of the toughest issues seldom found in any other inventories.
